The last major of the 2023 season is complete and the PGA Tour turns the focus to the FedEx Cup playoff that start in in a little less than a month.
This week the PGA Tour stops in Blaine, Minnesota for the 3M Open.
Established in 2019 this is the fifth playing of the 3M Open. Despite the lower purse FedEx Cup points are still up for grabs to those needing a solid finish this week to improve their ranking.
This year just the top 70 players make the playoff as opposed to the top-125 which made the playoff in previous years. Players hovering around the cut line are looking to make a good showing this week and next to secure a spot inside the FedEx Cup playoff.
The 3M Open didn’t receive a bump to designated status so the purse remains one or the lower on the PGA Tour that’s not an opposite field event. However, the purse did receive a slight bump over the 2022 event’s purse. This year the field will play for $7.8 million up from $7.5 in 2022. Last year’s champion Tony Finau pocketed $1.35 million; this year’s champion will take home $1.04 million.
Matthew Wolff won the inaugural event in 2019, bolted for LIV Golf in 2022 and will not be in the field this week. However with the new PGA Tour – PIF – DP World Tour merger and a path for the players that went to LIV Golf to return to the PGA Tour, Wolff maybe welcome at this event again.
