After fighting for his country in WWII, Bill Powell returned to the US only to be discriminated against on a golf course.
This moment inspired him to create his own golf course where everyone was welcome to come play, regardless of race.
In 1946 he created Clearview Golf Club. The only club: owned, created by, designed, and operated by a person of color. This course is still managed by his children to this day.
The ugly history of racial violence and exclusion in the US did not miss the golf courses, so having a Black owned and operated golf course with no discrimination and accessible to all races is extremely important. Especially in a community that has been largely excluded from the game of golf.
This must have been exactly what drove Bill Powell to create that opportunity for the Black community with his own hands.
He actually mowed the lawns and planted the grass there himself! The original mowers are available on display at the golf course.
In 2001, The U.S. Department of Interior named the Clearview Golf Course a National Historic Site.
