The PGA Tour is back in Texas at TPC Craig Ranch for the 69th edition of the AT&T Byron Nelson. Byron Nelson won the inaugural event in 1944 when it was known as the “Texas Victory Open”.
Despite the long history of this events it was not elevated to a designated event. In addition to not being elevated it is also sandwiched between last week’s designated event, the Wells Fargo Championship, and next week’s major championship, the PGA Championship.
Many of the top players have chosen to sit this trip to Texas out since many of the top 25 players were at the Wells Fargo Championship.
The purse for this year’s event did receive a slight bump over the 2022 tournament. This year the field will play for $9.5 million, up from $9.1 million last year.
Two former winners of the AT&T Byson Nelson will not be in the field due to suspensions by the PGA Tour. Sergio Garcia two time winner 2004 & 2016, and Phil Mickelson 1996 were suspended by the PGA Tour in 2022 after teeing it up in LIV Golf events.
Tiger Woods won the 1997 event when it was called the “GTE Byron Nelson Golf Classic”. That was win number five for Woods his first win following his first major championship, the 1997 Masters.
