In 1987, the BBC started broadcasting the event, which was also when the Scottish became the last qualifying opportunity for the Open Championship
Prior to 2022 the Genesis Scottish Open was solely a DP World Tour event. However, with the strategic alignment that took place between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour to combat the new threat of LIV Golf, the event became sanctioned on both tours.
Despite sanctioning by both tours and the high quality of talent attracted, the national open of Scotland was not elevated the event to designated status.
However, the purse for the Scottish Open did receive a million dollar bump for this year’s tournament. In 2022 the field played for $8 million with $1.44 million going to champion Xander Schauffele. This year a total of $9 million is up for grabbed with the champ taking home $1.62 million.
