Pre-owned golf clubs can be the perfect option for the beginner upgrading from an entry level set or the seasoned player looking for an upgrade.
Golf clubs can get expensive, really expensive.
A set of high end clubs could set you back thousands of dollars. New drivers with the latest technology can easily exceed $500.
One of the barriers that many potential golfers off to getting started in the sport is the sticker shock for equipment at the retail outlets. That paired with golf being challenging to learn can lead many to not even give golf a chance.
On the other end of the spectrum you’ll find deeply discounted clubs that are many generations old (10+ years) that are suitable for learning the game but will need to be upgraded once some level of competency is reached.
In the middle are clubs that are several generations old (less than 5 years) that have technology similar to the newest clubs on the market.
Clubs that debuted in 2019 will yield results that are similar to those that came out in 2022 yet deeply discounted.
How many clubs do I need?
Rule 4 of the USGA handbook states that a player can have a maximum of 14 clubs, however fewer than 14 is acceptable.
Many standard 14 club sets include:
Three Woods (Driver, 3-wood, 5-wood/utility wood)
Six Irons (4-Iron – 9-Iron)
Four Wedges (pitching, gap, sand, lob)
One Putter
Golf Bags
There are typically 3 types of golf bags:
- Stand
- Cart
- Staff
The stand bag is the lightest and is used for someone that is walking and carrying their own clubs. It’s perfect for someone who plays a simpler game and may not need a lot of the additional items other players may carry.
The cart bag is designed specifically to fit on the back of a golf cart. Heavier than the stand bag due to more compartments for accessories, but despite being designed specifically for cart use, most cart bags include a strap if carried.
The staff bag is designed for professional golfers who normally utilize the use of a caddy. Staff bags are heavier than the stand and cart bag due to the additional compartments for gear needed for touring professionals. The larger surface area comes in handy for professional golfers who use the space on their bags for sponsorship opportunities.
Where to buy used clubs?
Used golf clubs can be purchased in-person at speciality shows or online. There are pros and cons to each buying option.
In-store club purchase
This is by far the best option for purchasing used golf equipment if you have a specialty retailer in your area. You’ll be able to visually inspect the clubs, demo them, and walkout with your clubs the same day. If you go to a retailer like Golf Galaxy or Dicks sporting Good that have hitting bays they will allow you to demo the used clubs prior to purchase free of charge.
Three of my favorite places to buy used clubs in person are:
- Golf Galaxy
- Dicks Sporting Goods
- Play-It-Again Sports
Online Club Purchase
If there isn’t a retailer in a particular area that offers used clubs for sale then the next best option is to order used clubs online.

With the purchase of clubs online there are certain thing to consider.
Evaluating Used Clubs
The top reason for purchasing used clubs in person is the ability to property inspect the cliubs prior to purchase.
Things to look for
Grips
Worn grips will need to be replace prior to playing used clubs. The additional cost of re-gripping should be added into the budget for the use club purchase. Re-gripping used clubs at home can save money and another trip to the golf shop.
Shaft
Metal shafts should be free from any bend and defects. graphite shafts should be inspected for worn spot which could be a sign of weakness which would lead to a break.
Club Face
The club face should be free of any significant chunks or dings in the grooves which will lead to inconsistent golf shots. Grooves can be sharpened, however extreme blemishes will decrease spin and performance. Shiny spots on the club face is an indicator of excessive wear.
Hosel
The hosel is the place where the club shaft connects to the club head. Inspect the hosel for cracks and bends which will lead to future breaks or inconsistent golf shots.
Sizing
Proper sizing is important when purchasing clubs online. It is important to know what type of club length are needed for your particular body type. If shorter than 5’5″ or taller than 6’6″ specialty clubs may be in order.
Women’s clubs are typically shorter and lighter as compared to standard clubs.
