The PGA Tour's next stop is Dublin, Ohio for the Memorial Tournament
The PGA Tour next moved on the Ohio for the Memorial Tournament. Two weeks out from the U.S. Open the qualified are looking to fine tune their game prior to the 3rd major championship of the year.
The $12million prize pool is one of the larger non-major championship purses on the PGA Tour.
Notables in the field
The field this week will feature 7 of the top-10 in the world official golf ranking.
Jon Rahm, Cam Smith, Collin Morikawa, PAtrick Cantlay, Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy, and Jordan Spieth are the 7 of the top-10 who mae the trip to Ohio.
Bryson DeChambeau despite dropping from the top-15 is making his first tour appearance since recovering from wrist surgery that kept his out of the PGA championship.
DeChambeau won the Memorial Tournament in 2018, and is using this years edition as a tune up for prior to the U.S. Open.
It’s still to be determine which top players will skip next week’s RBC Canadian Open, and take the week off prior to the trip to Boston.
Players have until 5pm on Monday to enter an event.
However, with the RBC Canadian Open (Toronto) being relatively close to this year’s U.S. Open venue in Boston we may see more player compete north of the border.
5-time winner of the Memorial tournament, Tiger Wood, is not in the field this week and has been silent on traveling to Massachusetts in two week.
An appearance prior to traveling to Scottland for the Open Championship looks bleak following Tiger’s withdrawal from the PGA Championship.
Woods is in search of his 16th major championship and hopes to do is on his favorite course. St. Andrews’ flat terrain is much more suitable for the injured leg Woods is still recovering from.
Another player not heading to Toronto next week will be Dustin John who was dropped by RBC, the title sponsor of the Canadian Open, after he was included in the field for the first LIV Golf tournament in London.
RBC initially expressed disappointment with Johnson in his decision to jump ship and cited the PGA Tour’s stance on players participating in the rival league. However, less than 24 hours later the company announced that it would be parting way with not only Dustin Johnson, but also Graeme Mcdowell who was also in the LIV golf announcement.
If the rumor is true that DJ received $125 million to join the Saudi backed sportswashing tour, I would venture to say it would dwarf any sponsorship money lost from RBC.
