With the third Major Championship of the year now in the books, the PGA Tour now resumes in Cromwell Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. Founded in 1952 as the Insurance City Open this will be the 72nd edition of the event and the only PGA Tour stop in Connecticut.
Notably from 1972 to 1988 the event was named after African American entertainer Sammy Davis, Jr. Davis would routinely compete in the event’s Pro-Am.

The Travelers Championship is the 13th designated event on the PGA Tour Schedule. And with the bump to elevated event status the purse for this years event increased from $8.3 million in 2022 to $20 million this year. Last years champion Xander Schauffele took home $1.494 million last year, and this year’s winner will pocket $3.6 million.
With that amount of money up for grabs some of the best in the world will be in attendance despite coming out of the U.S. Open last week.
Not in the field this year are several previous Travelers champions that made the move to LIV Golf. Dustin Johnson (2020), Bubba Watson (2010 & 2018), Marc Leishman (2012), and Phil Mickelson (2001 & 2002), were suspended by the PGA Tour after they tee’ed it up in LIV Golf events.
LIV Golf CEO, Greg Norman won the 1995 event when it was contested as the Cannon Greater Hartford Open.
With the new merger between LIV Golf, and the PGA Tour those previous championship maybe able to make the trip to Connecticut again.
Also not in the field this week is Tiger Woods who announced last week that he would not compete in the Open Championship coming in July as he continues to recover from ankle surgery. The Travelers is one of the few events that Tiger has never competed in.
Despite Tiger never making the trip to Connecticut the Travelers, African-American golfers have had success at the event.
Charlie Sifford won the 1967 Greater Hartford Open which was the first of his two wins on the PGA Tour. Sifford would make 24 trips to Connecticut for the event.
Lee Elder lost to Lee Trevino in a playoff in 1972, and he was in a four way tie for second place in 1978. Elder would make 16 trips to Connecticut and have four top-10s.

Players to watch
Tony Finau
This will be Tony’s eighth trip to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. In seven previous events he has four top-25s with his best result of 13th coming in 2022.
In 16 events on the PGA Tour this season Tony has 11 top-25s finishes which include four top-10s including two wins. His first win of the season came at the Cadence Bank Houston Open back in November, and his second was at the Mexico Open at Vidanta in April.
Tony’s most recent was the U.S. Open. He finished in a tie for 32nd at the third Major Championship of the year.
Finau is currently ranked fifth in the FedEx Cup and 12th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Sahith Theegala
This will be Sahith’s third trip to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. His best result was last year’s 2nd place finish. He finished the week 67-65-64-67 for 263 and seventeen under par, two shots behind the champion Xander Schauffele.
In 21 events so far on the PGA Tour, Sahith has 10 top-25 finishes which include seven top-10s. His best result of the season was a tie for second at the RSM Classic back in October. In unofficial events Sahith won the QBE Shootout team event with partner Tom Hoge.
Last week’s U.S. Open, Sahith finished in a tie for 27th.
Theegala is currently ranked 24th in the FedEx Cup and 28th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
JJ Spaun
This will be JJ’s sixth trip to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. In five previous appearance JJ has made the cut three times. His best result came in 2019 when he finished 30th.
In 21 events so far this season on the PGA Tour JJ has eight top-25 finishes which include two top-10s.
His best finish of the season was a tie for fifth at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January.
JJ’s most recent event was the Memorial Tournament at the beginning of June. He finished in a tie for 30th.
Spaun is currently ranked 61st in the FedEx Cup, and 77th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Joseph Bramlett
This will be Joseph’s fifth trip to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. In four previous trips he has made the cut three times with his best result of 41st coming in 2020.
In 22 events so far on the PGA Tour Season, Joe has seven top-25 finishes which include three top-10s. His best result of the season was a tie for seventh place at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-am back in February.
Joe’s most recent event was the Memorial Tournament in early June where he finished in a tie for 16th place.
Bramlett is currently ranked 72nd in the FedEx Cup and 153 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Cam Champ
This will be Cam’s third trip to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. In two previous trips he has failed to make the cut.
In 18 events so far on the PGa Tour season, Cam has two top-25 finishes which were also his top-10 finishes. His best finishes were both eighth place. His first was solo eighth at the Zozo Championship in October, and the second was a tie for eighth at the Mexico Open at Vidanta.
Cam’s most recent event was two weeks ago at the RBC Canadian Open. He missed the cut.
Champ is currently ranked 138th in the FedEx Cup and 220th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
