The United Golfers Association (UGA) was born from the segregation, and racial tension sponsored by the PGA and its Caucasians Only Clause. The UGA is older than the official racist clause that segregates black and white golfers; it is said to have been formed in 1925 by George Adams and Robert Hawkins.
The UGA was a highly recognized non-profit organization that committed itself to introducing, developing, and advancing the participation and inclusion of Black youth and adults into the sport of golf.
The UGA operated a national golf tour for professional or amateur golfers, college golfers, and women golfers. The organization offered its resources and access to golf courses to allow young golfers, professionals, and amateurs an opportunity to play golf.
Desegregation in the PGA is said to have all but eliminated the UGA, but those rumors are greatly exaggerated. The UGA currently operates its own Golf Academy, which provides black golfers the direction necessary to grow their passion for the sport of golf.
Lee Elder is the first black golfer to win the Masters, and heavily endorses the UGA to this day. Elder says that “We need some kind of training ground that will support minority golfers who want to take their games to the highest level.”
Membership drives that try to create a buzz and gain new members, as well as campaigning for sponsors, are the major forces that keep the UGA relevant and in operation. The UGA created a target membership goal and target date for the enrollment of new members to the organization.
Today, the UGA can claim to have created several groups and organizations that are following in their footsteps.
The African American Golf Association (AAGA), United States Black Golf Association, United Black Golfers Association (UBGA), Western States Golf Association, Bogey Boyz, Black Jewels Ladies Golf Association, and African American Golf Foundation, Inc, all were born of the UGA and its movement to include black people in a sport that has traditionally tried to keep them out.
