One week remains until the start of the Tour Championship, and those hovering around the 125 cut line need a strong finish this week to secure their trip to Memphis for the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
The last stop on the PGA Tour’s regular season is here, and this week the Tour is in Greensboro, NC at Sedgefield Country Club.
Normally the PGA Tour make two regular season stops in North Carolina, however this year’s Wells Fargo Championship, usually hosted by Quail Hollow Country Club, was moved this year only to Congressional Country Club in Maryland.
The move is due to Quail Hollow will be hosting this year’s President’s Cup.
Sedgefield has hosted the Wyndham Championship since 2008. Sedgefield is a Donald Ross designed course which opened in 1926.
Wyndham took over sponsorship of the event in 2007 after the partnership DaimlerChrysler ended. The Wyndham Championship was previously known as the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro from 2003-2006, and the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic from 1996 to 2002.
KMart sponsored the event from 1988 to 1995 and was contested as the KMart Greater Greensboro Open.
From 1938 to 1995 the event was contested as Greater Greensboro Open with no corporate sponsorship in the event title.

LIV Litigation
11 members of the LIV Golf series that were suspended by the PGA Tour have filed an antitrust law suit against the PGA Tour setting up the legal battle that many have anticipated that have been observing the tension between the upstart LIV Golf series and the golf establishment.
The suit is led by Phil Mickelson and Bryson Dechambeau who did not resign their PGA Tour membership as a few who joined the LIV Golf series submitted.
The suit highlighted the PGA Tour’s “entrenched monopolist with a vicegrip on professional golf”.
The suit also made known that Phil Mickelson was suspended by the PGA Tour in March of this year for his active recruitment of PGA Tour members to the LIV Golf series.
Players to Watch
Harold Varner III
After several weeks off HV3 is back at work this week tuning up for the Tour Championship.
Well within the 125 cut line for the Tour Championship, Varner is currently ranked 58 in FedEx Cup points and would be good enough to get him through to the 2nd round of the of the Tour Championship.
Varner, who grew up and went to college (ECU) in North Carolina, will be in familiar territory when the Tour stops in Greensboro.
A fixture in all PGA Tour events in North Carolina, Harold calls the Wells Fargo Championship normally held in Charlotte “my major” due to the event being held in his home state’s capital.
Varner is back after a two week break following the 150th Open Championship when he finished T-28.
It has been a solid season for Varner with 15 cuts made in 20 events entered.
Cam Champ
After missing the weekend at the John Deere Classic which culminated his 5th straight missed cut it appeared that Cam Champ’s playoff hopes were slim to none.
At that point Champ had fallen to 157 in the FedEx Cup rankings needing to make up a lot of ground to make the post season.
However, after back to back top 20 finishes Cam is approaching the 125 cut line needed to make the opening round of the Tour Championship which begins next week in Memphis.
Champ is now 141st in the the FedEx Cup rankings and a good showing this week could vault him into the playoffs.
Joseph Bramlett
Joseph is entering the final week of the PGA Tour season needed a miracle this week to get into the Tour Championship. Anything short of a win and this will be Bramlett’s last event of the PGA Tour season.
Bramlett is currently ranked 173rd in the FedEx Cup points.
Tony Finau
Tony Finau is not in the field this week, and gets a well deserved week of after back to back wins at the 3M Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic.
With the win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic Finau moves into the Top-10 in the FedEx Cup points standings. Prior to the barrage of wins over the last few weeks Finau was ranked 30th in FedEx Cup points and comfortably in the Tour Championship.
After Tony’s 4th career win on the PGA Tour at the 3M Open he moved up in the rankings from 30th to 17th. Last week’s win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic moved Tony up the ranking and into the top-10 when he went from 17th to 7th.
Tony is skipping this week’s Wyndham Championship and has enough points to also skip the 1st leg of the Tour Championship starting next week in Memphis.
