Woods to skip U.S. Open; prep for Open Championship
Tiger Woods announced today on Twitter that he informed the USGA that he will not make the trip to Brookline, MA to try for his fourth U.S. Open Championship.
Instead, Woods will try for his 16th Major Championship later in the summer at the Open Championship.
Prior to contenting for his 4th Claret Jug at St. Andrew, Woods will play in a Pro-am in Ireland to get in playing shape prior to the Major Championship.
After playing in the Masters, Tiger was non-committal on playing in the PGA Championship or the U.S. Open. While standing on the grounds of Augusta National, Woods mentioned that he was committed to making the trip to “his favorite course”, St. Andrews., later in the summer.
Despite not mentioning the PGA Championship in his post Masters comments, Tiger went to Tulsa and gave it a go. However, after his round Saturday he withdrew from the event citing pain in his leg.
It was probably obvious for him that he wasn’t competing in the U.S. Open. Yet, us fans were holding out for his next appearance to be sooner than the last major of the year, and probably his last event of the calendar year.
Which leads us to…
How often should we expect to see Tiger going forward?
Tiger has expressed that later in his career he would be dedicated mostly to just competing in the major championships.
Outside of the 4 majors a year and the events that are sponsored/hosted by Tiger, how often should we expect to see him competing in PGA Tour events?
Gone are the days of him competing in the wrap-around season events, but which of the championship level non-major event will he play in?
Of course events like the Players Championship will still be on his radar when he’s back closer to full strength.
And it would make sense that he plays in events that he’s directly involed in sponsoring or hosting.
The car crash, from which he’s currently recovering, happened during the weekend of the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles which he was hosting.
He wasn’t competing that week, but that is the type of event he would try to give it a go at going forward.
