The PGA Tour heads to Charlotte NC for the 9th designated event of the season. The Wells Fargo Championship was established in 2003 as the Wachovia Championship, making this the 21st edition of the tournament.
After Wachovia’s acquisition by Fargo in 2008, the tournament briefly took on it’s venue’s name making it the Quail Hollow Championship from 2009 to 2010. The tournament returned to corporate naming rights when it debuted as the Wells Fargo Championship in 2011. There have been eleven Wells Fargo Championships in the last twelve years with the exception being in 2020 when the tournament was cancelled due two the Covid-19 pandemic.
Quail Hollow Country Club has hosted 15 of the 17 tournaments. Eagle Point hosted the 2017 event as Quail Hollow was hosting the 99th PGA Championship. TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm hosted the 2022 tournament while Quail Hollow was hosting the President’s Cup.
Quail hollow also hosted the PaineWebber Invitation on the PGA Tour Champions from 1983 to 1989, and the Kemper Open from 1969 to 1979.
Tiger Wood made seven trip to Quail Hollow and he won the 2007 Wachovia Championship which was the 57th win of his 82 wins on the PGA Tour.

McIlrory is back after missing the 9th designated event of the year, the RBC Heritage. Rory was fined $3 million by the PGa Tour for missing a second designated event, when only one absence was allowed.
Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler are the only two in the top-25 to miss this year’s event
Players to watch
Tony Finau
In five trips to Quail Hollow for the Wells Fargo Championship, Tony has just one missed cut. His best finish came in 2015 when he came in 16th place.
Finau was also on the US team that won the President’s Cup at Quail Hollow in 2022.
Tony finished 41st, in 2022 when the Wells Fargo Championship was played at TPC Avenel due to Quail Hollow hosting the President’s Cup.
Tony is currently ranked 9th in the FedEx Cup, and 13th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Sahith Theegala
This will be Sahith’s first trip to Quail Hollow.
So far this season in 17 events played Sahith has 10 top-25 finishes which include seven top-10s.
His best result in official events on the PGA Tour was a tie for second place at the RSM Classic back in November.
In unofficial events, Theegala won the QBE Shootout with partner Tom Hoge.
Sahith’s last appearance on the PGA Tour was at the Zurich Classic in April where he finished in a tie for 23rd place.
Theegala is currently ranked 12th in the FedEx Cup and 24th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
JJ Spaun
This will be JJ’s second time competing in the Wells Fargo Championship. In his previous appearance in 2021 he placed 18th.
In 17 events so far on the PGa Tour this season JJ has eight top-25 finishes including two top-10s. His best finish of the season was fifth place at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January (1/8/23).
JJ’s last appearance on the PGA Tour was in April at the Zurich Classic where he finished tied for 26th.
Spaun is currently ranked 61st in the FedEx Cup and 72nd in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Joseph Bramlett
This will be Joseph’s fourth time playing in the Wells Fargo Championship. In three previous appearances he has failed to make the cut.
In 18 events so far this season on the PGA Tour Joseph has five top-25 finishes which include three top-10s. His best finish this season came in February at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am where he finished in a tie for seventh place.
His most recent appearance was at last week’s Mexico Open at Vidanta where he finished tied for 10th.
Bramlett is currently ranked 77th in the FedEx Cup and 160th in the Official World Golf Ranking. 77th in the FedEx Cup just puts him outside the playoff cut off of 70.
Cam Champ
This will be Cam’s second trip to Quail Hollow for the Wells Fargo Championship. In his only previous appearance in 2019 he missed the cut.
So far this PGA Tour season in 14 events Cam has two top-25 which were also top-10s. Cam finished eighth at the ZOZO Championship back in October (10/16/22). He also finished in a tie for eighth at last week’s event, the Mexico Open at Vidanta.
The strong finish in Mexico last week broke a streak of six missed cuts for Cam.
Champ is currently ranked 127th in the FedEx Cup and 192nd in the Official World Golf Ranking.

This will be Willie’s first trip to Quail Hollow for the Wells Fargo Championship
Marcus is currently a member of the Korn Ferry Tour after a successful career on the APGA Tour.
Marcus Byrd
This will be Marcus’ first trip to Quail Hollow for the Wells Fargo Championship.
